20-Year Private Life Route (UK)

The 20-Year Private Life Route allows certain adults who have lived continuously in the UK for more than 20 years to apply for permission to stay on the basis of their private life. Importantly, the 20 years can include time spent in the UK with or without immigration permission.

Eligibility Criteria

• 20 Years’ Residence: If you are aged 18 or over, you may qualify if you have been continuously resident in the UK for more than 20 years.
• Lawful or Unlawful Residence: The qualifying period can include both lawful and unlawful residence.
• Continuous Residence: Your residence may be broken if you have been outside the UK for more than 6 months at one time or have spent 550 days or more outside the UK during the qualifying period.
• Suitability: You must meet the relevant suitability requirements under the Immigration Rules.

Very Significant Obstacles Alternative

If an adult has not yet lived in the UK for 20 years, they may still qualify under the Private Life route if there would be very significant obstacles to their integration in the country they would have to return to.

This is a separate eligibility route and does not require 20 years of residence.

Application Process

• Online Application: Apply from inside the UK using the relevant Private Life application form.
• Supporting Documents: Provide evidence of your identity, UK residence and circumstances supporting your private-life claim.
• Biometrics: Provide fingerprints and a photograph when required.
• Decision: UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) will assess the application and make a decision.

GOV.UK currently states that Private Life applications take around 12 months to receive a decision, although faster services may be available.

Fees

From 8 April 2026, the standard fee for a Leave to Remain – Other application made inside the UK is £1,407.

The Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is generally £1,035 per year for adults. A standard 30-month Private Life grant would therefore normally attract an IHS of £2,587.50, subject to any applicable exemption or fee waiver.

Applicants who cannot afford the application fee may be able to apply for a fee waiver in qualifying circumstances.

Duration and Settlement

• Duration: Adults on the Private Life route are normally granted 30 months of permission to stay.
• Extension: You can apply to extend your permission if you continue to meet the requirements.
• Settlement: The Private Life route can lead to settlement. However, the qualifying period for ILR depends on the applicant’s specific circumstances and the relevant settlement rules.

Important Considerations

• Keep evidence showing your continuous residence in the UK, including periods when you did not have immigration permission.
• Carefully check your travel history because absences can break continuous residence.
• A person does not automatically receive ILR after reaching 20 years. The 20-year rule generally provides a basis for permission to stay under the Private Life route.
• There is no minimum financial requirement equivalent to the £29,000 Partner-route threshold for the 20-year Private Life route.
• Work and study are generally permitted, although a no-public-funds condition may apply unless an exception applies.
• Apply while you are in the UK, as the Private Life route is an in-country route.

The 20-Year Private Life Route can provide an important immigration pathway for people who have developed strong and longstanding private-life ties in the UK. However, each application is assessed against the Immigration Rules and the applicant’s individual circumstances.
