Overview

The UK Minister of Religion Visa is a dedicated work route for individuals taking on a leading role within a faith-based organisation or religious order in the UK. The role may involve preaching, pastoral care, religious teaching, or other core duties connected with the organisation’s religious activities.

To apply, you must have a suitable role with an eligible UK organisation that holds a valid sponsor licence and can provide you with a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS).

Purpose and Eligibility

The Minister of Religion route is intended for individuals undertaking a recognised religious role within an eligible faith-based organisation or religious order. This route should be distinguished from the separate Temporary Work – Religious Worker route, which is intended for eligible temporary religious work and does not provide a path to settlement.

To qualify for the Minister of Religion visa, you must generally:

• Have a confirmed job offer from an eligible UK faith-based organisation or religious order licensed to sponsor workers.
• Hold a valid Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) outlining the details of your role and duties.
• Demonstrate English-language proficiency to at least CEFR Level B2 (reading, writing, speaking, and listening), unless exempt.
• Meet the financial maintenance requirement by holding at least £1,270 in savings for 28 consecutive days, unless you qualify for an exemption or your sponsor certifies maintenance on your CoS.

Religious Duties

Your core duties must be pastoral or spiritual and appropriate to the leadership role. Eligible duties may include:

• Leading religious services and ceremonies.
• Preaching and delivering religious teachings.
• Providing pastoral care and spiritual guidance.
• Supporting members of the religious community.
• Undertaking other religious duties appropriate to the role and organisation.

Salary Requirements

Unlike the standard Skilled Worker route, the Minister of Religion Visa does not have a high fixed salary threshold. However, your employer must ensure that the role complies with the UK National Minimum Wage and applicable working-time requirements.

Application Fees & Costs

Applicants and their sponsors should budget for the following Home Office charges:

• Application Fee (Outside the UK): £819 per person.
• Application Fee (Inside the UK / Extension): £943 per person.
• Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS): £1,035 per year of the visa granted, subject to the applicable rules.

Note: Unlike eligible Health and Care Worker Visa applicants, Ministers of Religion are generally not exempt from the Immigration Health Surcharge.

Visa Duration and Settlement

The Minister of Religion Visa is generally granted for up to 3 years and 1 month, or the period specified on your CoS plus 14 days, whichever is shorter. You can extend your visa if you continue to meet the requirements of the route and remain within the applicable maximum period.

The route provides a pathway to settlement. After 5 years of qualifying continuous residence, you may be eligible to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), provided you meet all relevant settlement requirements, including the Life in the UK Test where applicable.

Family Members (Dependants)

Your eligible partner and children may apply to join or remain with you as dependants, subject to the relevant immigration and relationship requirements.

Dependants must submit their own applications and pay the relevant application and Immigration Health Surcharge fees. They must also meet the applicable financial requirements, including:

• £285 for a partner
• £315 for the first child
• £200 for each additional child

Application Process and Processing Times

Applications are submitted online via the GOV.UK website. Applicants must prove their identity and provide biometric information as required, either through the UK Immigration: ID Check app or by attending a visa application centre.

Standard processing times are typically:

• 3 weeks for applications made from outside the UK.
• 8 weeks for applications made from inside the UK.

Processing times can vary depending on individual circumstances and whether additional checks or information are required.
